Guiding Light Tribute package you did not see!
09.01.2009

From the desk of Michael Fairman: Last night's Daytime Emmy telecast featured a one minute and thirty four second tribute package to Guiding Light. As many know, I was brought in by the executive producers of the show to spearhead the tribute efforts and to produce it. Initially, I presented them a four-minute version encompassing many more of the actors, characters and memorable moments from the longest running show in broadcast history, that I felt did justice to its legacy. I know that many long time fans of "GL", and viewers of the genre were upset about last night's short tribute package and its contents. In the end, the executive producer wanted to air a very short tribute, due to time constraints, and I needed to respect that, and in addition, the powers-that be preferred a change of the direction of the package, which is what what aired last night. But if it were up to me, a longer package would have aired, but ultimately it was not my call to make. I wanted to share this original 4-minute clip package with the online soap community as a love letter to the show and its long-time fans. Having to condense 57 years of footage into a tribute for television, is no easy feat, because nothing can really sum up the shows meaning to so many lives.
